Zuckerman Spaeder Recognized by Maryland Legal Aid for “Exceptional Support”
Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) and the Equal Justice Council (ECJ) celebrated the 25th Annual Equal Justice Awards on May 21. Zuckerman Spaeder’s Baltimore office was honored with two awards, recognizing the firm’s long-standing support of the organization and its mission.
Maryland Legal Aid Executive Director Vicki Schultz thanked Zuckerman Spaeder for its “exceptional support” over the years, calling the firm a “stalwart advocate for equal access to justice.” She noted that the Preeminent Partner Award was given in recognition of “Zuckerman Spaeder’s outstanding record of consistent support” for MLA and the EJC, while the Defender Award recognizes the firm’s “exceptional generosity.” Zuckerman Spaeder was one of just a few firms to receive two awards.
MLA is a private, non-profit law firm and the largest provider of free, direct legal services in Maryland. And while the organization has existed for 113 years, this year's awards event marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the EJC. The EJC works closely with private lawyers and law firms to advance and support MLA’s mission.
Baltimore office Managing Partner Martin S. Himeles, Jr. reflected, “We take great pride in the work that Maryland Legal Aid and the Equal Justice Council do for our community. We are honored to be recognized for this long-running collaboration and look forward to our continued impact on behalf of those who most need our help.”
The firm has received several recent recognitions for its dedication to pro bono representation and community service. It was honored by the National Legal Aid and Defender Association with the Beacon of Justice Award in 2024, 2022, and 2021, by the Capital Area Immigrants' Rights (CAIR) Coalition through the 2023 Detained Children’s Champion Award, by Legal Aid DC as a 2023 “Justice Partner,” and by the National Law Journal, which named Zuckerman Spaeder to the Pro Bono Hotlist in 2021.
