Zuckerman Spaeder Recognized as 2023 Justice Partner by Legal Aid DC

Zuckerman Spaeder LLP is pleased to be recognized by Legal Aid DC as a 2023 “Justice Partner” in support of the firm’s philanthropic support for Legal Aid’s mission. Alongside more than 200 members of the legal community in DC,  the firm was named a top supporter of Legal Aid DC’s vital programs that provide free civil legal assistance for local individuals and families who need a lawyer but can’t afford one.

Legal Aid DC is Washington, DC’s oldest and largest civil legal services organization, providing free legal assistance for more than 10,000 people annually. The organization has seen an increase in the need for help in 2023, with some practice areas experiencing double the requests for assistance compared to 2022.

Reflecting on the firm’s relationship with the organization, Zuckerman Spaeder Pro Bono Program co-chair and Legal Aid DC board member Steven N. Herman commented, "Empowering equal access to justice lies at the core of our principles. Through our support of Legal Aid DC, we strive to ensure that legal assistance is available to all who need it, not just those with the means to afford it. We’re proud to join Legal Aid in its mission to make justice real for every individual."

Through various fundraising campaigns, the firm works in concert with Legal Aid DC to bring people together in support of the organization’s mission. The firm also attends and serves as a sponsor for the annual Servant of Justice Awards, which honors individuals who demonstrate their dedication and remarkable achievement in ensuring that all people have equal and meaningful access to justice.

About Legal Aid

Legal Aid DC was formed in 1932 to “provide legal aid and counsel to indigent persons in civil law matters and to encourage measures by which the law may better protect and serve their needs.” Legal Aid is the oldest and largest civil legal services program in the District of Columbia.

Over the last 90 years, Legal Aid staff and volunteers have been making justice real – in individual and systemic ways – for tens of thousands of persons living in poverty in DC. The largest part of their work is comprised of representing individuals in housing, domestic violence/family, public benefits, and consumer law matters, although they also work on immigration law matters and help individuals with the collateral consequences of their involvement with the criminal justice system. From the experiences of their clients, Legal Aid identifies opportunities for law reform, public policy advocacy, and systemic reform litigation.
