Former HHS and FDA Official Peggy Dotzel Rejoins Zuckerman Spaeder

Zuckerman Spaeder LLP is pleased to announce that Margaret “Peggy” Dotzel has rejoined the firm as partner. Ms. Dotzel recently served as Acting General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where she worked alongside current firm partner William B. Schultz.

Ms. Dotzel, who also trained as a pharmacist, served from 1995 to 2003 in various senior positions at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), rising to the role of Associate Commissioner for Policy. She worked as Counsel at Zuckerman Spaeder from 2006 to 2011, and then joined HHS as Deputy General Counsel. She was named Acting General Counsel following the departure of Mr. Schultz.

“I am delighted to rejoin Zuckerman Spaeder, which combines one of the country’s very best food, drug and health care practices with a collegial, client-focused culture,” said Ms. Dotzel. “Working with the firm recently has made it clear that my approach and experience fits perfectly with the exceptional work being done here. The issues facing the health care sector have never been more complex, and Zuckerman Spaeder has the right team to help clients solve problems and seize opportunities.”

At the firm, Ms. Dotzel will focus her practice on health law and food and drug law, including administrative actions, litigation, and legislative and policy matters.

“We are so happy to have Peggy return to her former home here at Zuckerman Spaeder,” said firm Chairman Dwight Bostwick. “She’s a remarkable person and one of the nation’s true experts in the areas of health, food and drug law. Having worked side by side with Peggy in the past, we know how much value she will bring to our clients, to the firm, and to our growing reputation and capacity in the health care field.”

Ms. Dotzel worked as a hospital pharmacist before attending law school. She received her B.S., summa cum laude, from Temple School of Pharmacy and earned her J.D., with honors, Order of the Coif, at the University of Texas School of Law.
